Fire Chief’s Regulation No. 4 (REG 4)

What is LAFD Reg 4?

Regulation 4 (Reg 4) is a Los Angeles Fire Department–mandated testing program that requires annual and 5‑year inspections of fire‑life safety systems such as fire pumps, sprinklers, standpipes, alarms, and more. Only certified testers can perform Reg 4 tests.

Reg 4 was created in the 1960s after several major fires — including the Olive Street fire — revealed that many buildings had fire protection systems that were installed but never tested. LAFD created Reg 4 to ensure systems are regularly inspected, maintained, and ready for real emergencies.
